WHY YOU NEED TO BE WELL INFORMED ON NUTRITION

There are two types of diseases that exist in the world. One group is ancient and includes all those that we get from bacteria, viruses, insect bites or we get directly from contact with the body fluids of infected animals. These diseases, such as malaria, cholera, typhoid, leprosy, sexually transmitted diastase (STDs), etc., that are more common in  underdeveloped countries than in the developed ones of the global North are called communicable, because we can pass them on among ourselves or from animals to us.
The other set of diseases result from the lifestyle of the affected person and, therefore, stays only with him or her. This description, "lifestyle", already suggests that they are caused by a person's style of living, such as his diet, the manner he normally handles his mental challenges and the level of his physical activity. These diseases include constipation, arteriosclerosis (i.e., damage to blood vessels), hypertension, diabetes, piles (haemorrhoids), etc.
There is currently a silent worldwide epidemic of lifestyle diseases. While countries of the global North (i.e., Europe, North America, etc.) have largely switched from communicable diseases to those that are lifestyle in nature, countries of the global South (i.e., the underdeveloped world) are rather speedily adding these lifestyle diseases to their already large stock of communicable diseases. More than 70% of all health problems in the world, whether communicable or not, can be prevented or speedily cured by improving the body's own resistance. Obviously, whatever you regularly eat and drink has the greatest influence in weakening or strengthening your body's resistance and its ability to fight infection, keep off lifestyle diseases or effectively handle stress.
Despite these huge problems facing the world, most medical schools worldwide have either token or no programmes on nutrition. Yet, nutrition is a highly demanding and specialized field of study, with its own research activities and academic programmes leading up to doctoral degrees at various universities. Therefore, unless your doctor is personally interested and regularly updates his knowledge on nutrition, he will be repeating outdated or even pathogenic advice that he has picked along the way. He cannot meaningfully blend his allopathic prescriptions with those that are nutritionally relevant. Probably already a victim himself of some lifestyle disease, your physician would be no better than a partially-sighted person leading the blind!
