NATURAL REMEDIES FOR RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) is a neurological disorder that affects millions of people around the world. It is marked by an uncontrollable urge to move the legs. Symptoms usually strike when patients are lying in bed at night but RLS can also flare up in the day time (especially during prolonged periods of sitting).

SYMPTOMS
Restless leg syndrome patients typically report a feeling of burning, tingling, aching, itching, or tugging  deep beneath the skin of their lower leg (and sometimes in the thighs as well).
Although symptom intensity and duration vary from person to person, moving the legs tends to ease the discomfort for most patients.

REMEDIES
# Get up and walk. Walking around helps to calm the legs.
# Cut down your caffeine consumption and avoid tobacco and alcohol.
# Modify your medication. Some over-the-counter drugs such as certain cold medications and allergy pills contain mild stimulants that can result in jittery legs. Ask your pharmacist if any medications you are taking contain stimulants and whether there any non-stimulating alternatives.
# Take a bath. A warm bath or massage before bed relaxes and therefore, may be helpful.
# Cold and Warm Therapy. Alternate between putting hot packs and draping cool towel on your legs.
# Improve your diet. Deficiency in iron, foliate and magnesium may contribute to restless leg syndrome.
# Stick to a bed time schedule. Sleeping at the same time each night and allowing for a full night's sleep may help avoid the fatigue that could be a contributory factor to restless leg syndrome.

If symptoms persist after you have tried the remedies listed above, consult your doctor as the RLS could be as a result of a more serious ailment like diabetes or renal failure.
